Green MP Marama Davidson says Prime Minister John Key needs to use the power of his office to get answers about the death of a New Zealander in Sydney’s notorious Villawood detention centre.
There’s been a virtual news blackout since 43-year-old father of four Rob Peihopa died last week at the centre.
Initial claims by authorities that he had a heart attack were rejected by the coroner.
Ms Davidson says his family here is struggling to find out what did happen, but what is known is that outsourcing company Serco isn’t a good manager of detention centres.
"There should have been a lot more care shown from our prime minister, from our government, to look into what is happening. They have already been self-harming, some of these detainees, and facing huge mental stress. Now someone has died. We need to really care and support this whanau to find out what has happened," she says.
Ms Davidson says the Foreign Affairs Ministry has also been negligent for not visiting and supporting New Zealanders whose visas have been cancelled under Australia’s tough new immigration rules.
