Courthouse street named for rainbow judge

A new road behind the Manukau District Court will carry the name of a trail-blazing Maori judge who served there.
Karina Way, who died in 2005, was only the second Maori woman to become a judge and was known as the rainbow judge because of her work with people of diverse backgrounds.
Her father, prominent educator Tawhirimatea Williams, says the decision of the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board came as a huge surprise and a great honour.
"Although 10 years or more have gone since Karina passed on, there are still people thining about her and holding her dear to their hearts, and the family is very pleased indeed," he says.
