Waikato Tainui spokesperson Rahui Papa on Paakiwaha
The Ministry of education is refusing to include the New Zealand Land Wars in the curriculum.
Rahui Papa who supported students from Otorohanga College who took a petition to the government to have a day set aside to remember the NZ wars, says when you make it a compulsory curriculum item then it raises the awareness of all New Zealanders to our history, to our culture to what makes us tick.
He says it's not just about Maori dying in the land wars but about the English troops, the colonial troops as well and we have to face up to our past and our history.
