Trail blazing broadcaster Whai Ngata dies


The contribution of Whai Ngata to Maori broadcasting is being celebrated as Ngati Porou prepares to bury him alongside his esteemed ancestors.
Mr Ngata died yesterday in Auckland after a long illness and will be taken back to Ruatoria.
The great grandson of Sir Apirana Ngata started his career at the Auckland Star and Radio New Zealand before joining Television New Zealand and working with colleagues like Ernie Leonard, Derek Fox and Purewa Biddle to set up a Maori and Pacific unit and the Maori language news bulletin Te Karere.
He retired in 2008.
Mr Ngata also completed and saw to publication the English-Maori dictionary that was the life work of his father Hori Mahue Ngata.
