The first Auckland Iron Maori is on tomorrow from Umupuia Marae at Maraetai.
One of the organisers Lee Grace says the triathlon starts at 7.30, with about 300 competitors expected.
There’ll be entertainment at the changeover point from about 9.
Mr Grace says while increasing numbers of participants are going on to regular Iron man and triathlon competitions, the important thing is that Maori are embracing more active lifestyles.
"Our kaupapa really is about getting people out, being active, and where the path takes them individually is not too much of a worry for us, as long as they are out there doing something," he says.
Mr Grace says organisers are talking with iwi about an event in Christchurch, and there are also events to look forward to in Napier and Hawera.
