Trust challenge for state broadcaster
The chair of Maori radio umbrella group Te Whakaruruhau says Radio New Zealand can’t be trusted to deliver Maori content, and it needs to be made accountable by funding agencies.
In a column posted on the WaateaNews.com site, Willie Jackson says the fact the national broadcaster's Maori content makes up only 1 percent of its news and current affairs is a disgrace, and it isn't doing enough to fix the problem.
He says while Maori broadcasters are challenging the fact it dropped any te reo Maori content and axed its dedicated Maori bulletins.
"No accountability. It's a disgrace. And what (RNZ head of content) Carol Hirschfeld says is just trust us, we will be able to do Maori news every now and then, no doubt about it. The problem is I don't trust them. I might trust that Carol will do her best but you are part of an institution that has a history of prejudice against Maori," Mr Jackson says.
He says mainstream media seem unconcerned by Radio New Zealand’s lack of Maori content, but that’s because they are also deficient in carrying Maori voices.
