Maori bankers get career help
Some of New Zealand's largest companies are signing on to a programme aimed at helping Maori staff move into the ranks of management.
The Whakaterehia Maori Acceleration Programme started as a partnership between Te Puni Kokiri and ASB Bank, and now includes Fletcher Building, Fonterra, Mainfreight and Vector.
ASB Securities Principal Angela Busby says the aim was to develop a more supportive environment for Maori in the bank, identify Maori talent and attract more Maori to the industry.
She says it has given Maori more confidence and more than half of the original intake has had a promotion.
The one-year diploma course is provided by the Institute of Management.
Topics covered include communication, accounting principles, HR management, applied project management and leadership, with the employing organisations providing mentoring, individual coaching, guest speakers and a cultural component to the workshops.
