Far North carvings excite iwi
Far north iwi Te Rarawa hopes that carvings found in a farm shed can be traced back to the tribe.
The amo or front posts have been taken to Kaitaia's Te Ahu whare taonga for assessment and restoration.
The carvings were rescued by Barry Wiki and his wife Mahue and handed to the runanga.
Runanga chair Haami Piripi says they are a link to the pre-European past.
"We think that the timber is kauri which means that they probably originate from here. We are very very excited by this find and we hope it will lead us to a whole new renaissance of art and style and cultural endeavour in terms of whakairo," he says.
Haami Piripi says the runanga is talking to the Ministry of Culture and Heritage about their future custodianship.
