Ahurei gets wireless boost

Tuhoe has teamed up with Vodafone to bring high tech support to the Ahurei, its long-running biennial Easter cultural festival.
As well as supplying a range of devices to improve communications between staff and volunteers during the three-day event, the telecommunications giant is boosting the capacity of its Ruatoki cell site to cope with the expected 20,000 strong crowd.
The cell went in last year as part of the government-funded rural broadband initiative to service the 1000 or so homes and businesses in that part of the eastern Bay of Plenty and Te Urewera.
Te Komiti o Runa spokesperson, Patrick McGarvey says a reliable telecommunications network will not only help organisers but also allows the community to share their Tuhoe Ahurei experience in real time on social media with whanau across the world.
