View on whitestreaming different from whiteboard
The Tertiary Education Union is in a war of words with Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce about what is says is whitestreaming of support jobs at universities and polytechnics.
Mr Joyce says he's not concerned with whether specialist Maori jobs and services had been replaced with with generalist roles, but whether Maori were achieving.
He says participation and achievement rates among Maori students had risen.
But union Maori vice president James Houkamau says Maori students will look at other options such as wananga if they can't get the support they need.
"Minister Joyce says it's not a concern. How I read that is he doesn't give a toss. He says Maori are achieving, Maori are engaging. We believe that's lies, lies. He needs to really come to the coalface or the whiteboard face and have a look for himself," he says.
