Callaghan Innovation says the response to the new Maori category in the annual Hi Tech Innovation Awards is testament to the increasing amount of innovation Maori businesses and other organisations are doing.

Some 22 organisations have entered for the category, with winners to be announced in May.

Hemi Rolleston, Callaghan's Maori economy manager, says use of high tech is critical for Maori to increase the returns they get from their asset base.

A range of New Zealand and international technology experts will judge the 13 awards categories, including former Dragon's Den investor James Caan.
