Ancient stream a path to future
Otago Polytechnic art and design students are looking back into the Maori past of their campus to find pathways to the future.
Communication design principal lecturer Caro McCaw says the campus is divided by the waters of the Leith or Owheo, and today's Owheo Rising Walking Symposium made students from both schools reconsider the stream as a way to connect with each other, nature and culture through storytelling and creative practices.
She says it's where Maori came to share knowledge.
Projects the students came up with included a riverside seat where people could take photos to share on the new stream of social media, and a paper boat race with embedded native grass seeds that will grow when the boats sink and provide places for native fish to lay their eggs.
