Owners left behind by reform minister
The woman behind a claim challenging Te Ture Whenua Maori Bill says Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell needs to take on board the Waitangi Tribunal’s findings.
The tribunal says the rewrite of Maori land law has been done without proper consultation, and in its current form it will prejudice all Maori landowners.
Marise Lant says she’s disappointed the minister is trying to say the tribunal is no longer valid because a different version of the bill is no being considered.
She says the fundamental problems with the rewrite remain.
"Right now all it is, is a bill that's hellbent on supporting more corporate governance entities that will come over the top of those small individual land owners and our people will be left behind" she says.
Marise Lant says consultation on the reform needs to be done at marae level, rather than brief information hui in hotel conference centres.
