Mayors keen on rates relief

Mayors have offered support to a plan to wipe past rates on Maori land if the owners show how they plan to develop it, or that it is impossible to develop.
The possible change to the Rating Act has been added to the package of reforms Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell is planning for Maori land law.
After being briefed on the plan by the minister this week, Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon says $4 million of the estimated $65 million in outstanding rates on Maori land across the country are in his district.
