The Maori Language Commission Te Taura Whiri plans to use this year’s Rio Olympics to get people using more te reo Maori.
It has set the theme for Maori Language Week from July 4 to 10 as ‘te reo tautoko – behind you all the way’ which is about using te reo Maori to support people, to inspire and to cheer on.
It says it will show New Zealand that there is a place for the Maori language in stadiums, on sports fields, in the news and social media, and that it is a language for all New Zealanders.
