Rehab missing for short sentence offenders

Corrections is trialing a new programme targeting high risk offenders serving short sentences.
Regional operations manager Heather Mackie says Te Korowai Aroha is for prisoners who previously may not have received assessment and intervention because they are on a short sentences.
The men may in fact have been in prison several times, and the programme pilot at Spring Hill in North Waikato is a way to help them interrupt the cycle of offending.
International research indicates safety planning and relapse prevention work can reduce recidivism for offender populations.
Each offender will receive a psychological assessment and then participate in group sessions focused on helping them to develop a better understanding of why they offend.
Staff will work with them to identify an appropriate support system and facilitate a whanau hui or support system meeting to promote understanding of the participant’s risks and coping strategies.
