No room at Ngati Tama table for White
In a massive vote of no confidence, members of a Taranaki iwi have voted to keep the man who lost their treaty settlement off the governing board.
Greg White was the lowest polling of eight candidates who stood for seven seats on Te Runanga o Ngati Tama, getting just 89 votes.
Mr White was the public face of the tribe for more than a decade as it negotiated its treaty settlement and then invested the settlement money in software companies and other speculative ventures.
It is now worth about $2.8 million, down from a high of $17 million eight years ago.
Mr White made himself scarce three years ago when the scale off the losses emerged, but resurfaced after an emergency committee salvaged what was left of the tribe’s money.
He has been representing the iwi on the Iwi Chairs Forum as recently as last month.
