Kapiti kiwi on the move

Ngati Toa is letting go of the little spotted Kiwi on Kapiti Island to support wildlife restoration efforts elsewhere.
Ten Females are headed for Red Mercury Island in Coromandel.
The Department of Conservation’s Whitianga operations manager, Dale Tawa, says the genetic diversity of the little spotted kiwi on Red Mercury Island is lower than desirable to ensure a viable population.
Ten males are off to Cape Sanctuary near Napier, where they should help efforts to establish a self-sustaining population.
There are around 1200 little spotted Kiwi on Kapiti Island.
