Putea to boost matauranga
Up to $2 million is up for grabs this year for programmes that grow the skills and capacity of Maori researchers and organisations in science and innovation.
Science Minister Steven Joyce says innovative results have already started coming through from Maori-led programmes funded by Te Punaha Hihiko – Vision Matauranga Capability Fund, which is now in its third year.
The research falls into four main themes:
– It will contribute to economic growth through distinctive indigenous research and development;
– it will promote environmental sustainability through iwi and hapu relationships with land and sea;
– It will improve health and social wellbeing;
– or it will explore exploring indigenous knowledge and science and innovation, which comes under the heading of matauranga.
Mr Joyce says the research will help determine future resource development by integrating relevant scientific, planning and Matauranga information.
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says the putea enables science organisations to better identify Maori innovation potential and to improve the way knowledge is passed on between Maori and researchers.
Proposals need to be with the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment by noon on May 3.
