Conversations key to reo uptake
Educator Dr Joe Te Rito believes a new approach to audio books could be what many people need to make the next step in their reo journey.
Mr Te Rito has spent several years working through the sound archives of Radio Kahungunu to find entertaining conversations that are the basis for the project.
The first volume launched last weekend at the Eastern Institute of Technology in Hastings features a conversation recorded in 2000 between kuia Apikara Rarere and Irirangi (Lil) Robin.
People can read the words and the translation while listening to the back and forth chat.
He says it could speed up language acquisition.
"People will hear it, they can associate it with the written word because often you can get a barrage of words as a learner and not be able to separate where one begins and ends. When you can see that on paper and associate it with the sound texts then I think bingo, it's going to make a lot of pennies drop for people," he says.
Dr Joe Te Rito says he has the manuscripts for four more audio books.
