NZ taking Tiaki on sustainable catch tech
Maori fisheries settlement companies Aotearoa Fisheries and Sealord along with Sanford and the Ministry for Primary Industries have launched Tiaki, a seafood category for fish caught with the new Precision Seafood Harvesting technology.
The new nets developed by Nelson-based crown institute Plant & Food Research can deliver fish to the deck in pristine condition, which means they can attract a premium.
Undersized or unintended catch can be returned to the sea with a much higher survivability rate.
Customers who buy fish with the Tiaki label will be able to use a phone app to see where and how their fish was caught.
Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy says precision seafood harvesting has cost the industry and government $48 million to develop, but it will enhance New Zealand’s reputation as a producer of premium, high quality, sustainable products.
The programme is expected to deliver around $44 million in economic benefits a year by 2025.
Tiaki-branded fish will be available in limited quantities for the new Zealand market later this year.
