Aus immigration change token gesture
Labour leader Andrew Little says New Zealand and Australia need to get back to having an easy exchange of citizens, rather than tinkering with rules for gaining citizenship.
Australia has offered a new special visa category offering a faster track to citizenship for high earning kiwis.
That weill still leave many kiwis, includign a large number of Maori, in a prevarious position.
Mr Little says New Zealanders across the Tasman are denied the services their taxes pay for.
"Whether it's the national disability insurance scheme where kiwis just by dint of being kiwis miss out or whether it's things like the new deportation rules that mean if you commit a crime or even if you're regarded by the Australian minister of immigration as of bad character you can be deported, all those things don't stack up to a good relationship and we have got to address all of those things," he says.
Mr Little says Australian politicians have told him New Zealanders are no different than citizens from any other country, but there is a special history between the two countries.
