WWI memorial chip off the block
Ngai Tahu artist Ross Hemera will take the lead in designing a World War One Centenary memorial in Auckland Domain.
The project will be done by the Wraight Athfield Landscape and Architecture consortium, which has also built the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington and the New Zealand Memorial in London’s Hyde Park, as well as Queenstown Post Office and Christchurch Civic Building projects for Ngai Tahu.
Hemera’s concept of Te Takuahi – the Hearth will involve digging a terraced crescent carved into the ground and a raised crescent sloping gently back toward the museum and Pukekaroa Hill, offering new views of the harbour.
He says it will be as if the shape was formed by a swing of a toki aronui or carving chisel.
Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the chosen design is an open and simple concept which maintains the sanctity and open space character of the grass area in front of the museum.
