Mahana real winner says Tem
Better than Once Were Warriors.
That's the verdict of Temuera Morrison on his latest collaboration with director Lee Tamahori.
Mahana got the red carpet treatment in Auckland yesterday after premiering at this month's Berlin Film Festival.
Morrison and Jim Moriarty play the patriarchs of two East Coast shearing families locked in a rivalry that threatens to overwhelm younger generations.
He says it's a great story, adapted from the novel Bulibasha by Witi Ihimaera.
"I think this film is one of those special ones. It's right up there with Warriors, possibly better than Warriors, probably better than Whale Rider as well. I was at the Berlin Film Festival along with Akuhata Kupenga, he's our star, boy from the coast, the festival really turned it on for us and the guy was saying 'I see all movies but this is a real film about real people,' so it has got that real people look about it," Morrison says.
Mahana opens in cinemas on March 3.
