Free study policy could boost Maori participation
Labour leader Andrew Little says his new education and training policy will make a major difference to Maori.
The party is proposing free tertiary education for school leavers, starting in 1919 with up to one year and moving to three years from 2025.
Mr Little says he's getting a favourable response, particularly from private training establishments which target young Maori and Pasifika students.
It will make a big difference with young people who are not confident about further education and training.
"You know the idea you have to take on a huge debt to get it is the thing that is most off putting. The response I am getting is this the the thing that will get them over the line and get people to say it is worth giving it a go because you will not get the big debt but you will get exposed to a step up in education, give yourself a better chance in life," Mr Little says.
