No reprieve for Whangaruru kura
The plug has been pulled on a troubled Northland charter school.
Education Minister Hekia Parata and Parliamentary Under-Secretary David Seymour say they have formally terminated the agreement under which the Nga Parirau Matauranga Charitable Trust runs the partnership school at Whangaruru.
Ms Parata says while the trust had made significant progress on the governance and management issues outlined in a performance notice a year ago, the educational challenges facing the school are too great to be overcome.
These include the kura’s lack of internal capacity and heavy reliance on third parties to take it forward, problems attracting suitably qualified teaching staff to Whangaruru, and concerns over whether there are enough students in the catchment.
She says the current trust board has worked hard, been extremely professional and acted in the best interests of the kura’s students throughout.
The termination will take effect on March 7, and the Ministry of Education is working with the board, students and whanau to help the students to transition to other education options.
