New CEO to drive Hato Petera rescue

A former pupil has taken on the task of managing facilities at Northcote-based Maori boarding school Hato Petera, but there is still no guarantee the boarding hostel will open.
Te Whanau o Hato Petera Trust vice-chair Rudy Taylor says the trust yesterday appointed Vivian Te Mana Hahipene as chief executive.
He has a science and management background.
Mr Taylor says the hostel, which was renovated over summer by volunteers, is now ready for this year’s students.
He says the trust is waiting for the Ministry of Education to confirm the building is up to standard.
It’s also meeting today with the Bishop of Auckland, Patrick Dunn.
Last month the Auckland Catholic Diocese said the hostel would not reopen, and Te Whanau of Hato Petera Trust was being dissolved for reasons of insolvency.
