Ngapuhi gears up for festival
The Ngapuhi Runanga expects up to 40,000 people at its biennual festival in Kaikohe this weekend.
Runanga spokesperson Tio Taiaki as well as two days of live music, sports, kapa haka and whaikorero, Saturday features a wananga on Ngapuhi history.
That will include talks by curator Maureen Lander and others around her paintings inspired by Hongi Hika’s daughter Hariata Rongo, who was the wife of Hone Heke.
They’re part of a special exhibition presented as a tribute to the late ceramic artists Manos Nathan and Colleen Urlich.
They were very much the instigators and key supporters of the Toi Ngapuhi Festival. The success and the recognition it has is largely due to their leadership and their efforts. They are missed very much and there will be several tributes at the exhibition to both Colleen and Manos.
The Toi Ngapuhi Maori Art Exhibition opens this evening at Northland College and runs through the weekend.
