Kaumatua tireless in support for reo
Ngapuhi kaumatua Andy Sarich is being remembered for the tireless efforts he and his wife Kath put into reviving interest in education and especially the Maori language and dialect of the north.
His funeral service was held this morning at Tauwhara Marae in Waimate North.
Former MP Shane Jones says Mr Sarich, who had Dalmatian and Maori whakapapa, showed the benefits of growing up with earlier generations.
He was a gifted speaker who could command an audience and set the tone for any large gathering, and he was also extremely influential in smaller settings.
