The Fire Service was called to the Otaki complex just after 6 last night to find the building well alight.
Eventually nine crews from as far away as Wellington were called.
Neighbours said there had been renovation work going on at the university during the day.
Security guard Kereama Wanoa said the room was being turned into a showroom to display carvings, which fortunately were in storage elsewhere at the time of the fire.
