Facts in short supply in TPPA spin
A critic of the Trans Pacific Partnership says the Government still hasn’t come up with any facts to show the 12-country pact will be good for Aotearoa.
Prime Minister John Key was booed at Ratana on Sunday when he was there to tell tell them the truth, which was that New Zealand and Maori need the deal.
Auckland University Law professor Jane Kelsey says a series of expert papers released this month have shown this country will be worse off in investment, the economy, the environment or support for the Treaty of Waitangi.
She says Maori are galled by the fact the Government is willing to give foreign companies guaranteed rights when it can’t deal with a range of outstanding Maori rights.
They are also upset there was no consultation.
"And this nonsense about (trade negotiations) are always done this way, well there was a big fight in the late 90s, early 2000s that forced them to hold hui around the country, TPK was on the ball doing stuff. What we’ve got now is ‘don’t worry you little heads about it, trust us, it will all be OK.’ Since when have Maori ever been able to trust the crown," Professor Kelsey says.
There’s a public meeting at 7pm tonight at the Auckland Town Hall featuring Professor Kelsey and former trade lawyer Lori Wallach from United States advocacy group Public Citizen.
