Rotorua mayor to give major treaty speech

The mayor who steered Rotorua Lakes Council into a new partnership with Te Arawa will be the featured speaker at one of the most significant annual forums for discussion of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Steve Chadwick will give the Watangi Ruarautau lecture at Victoria University’s Te Herenga Waka Marae in Wellington on January 31.
The proposal to give Te Arawa the task of coming up with an alternative to an advisory standing committee caused at times acrimonious debate in the sulphur city, but the former Labour MP managed to get her council to support the change.
Under the new partnership, a board elected by Te Arawa will appoint representatives to the council’s two main committees, and Te Arawa will also gat a place on Resource Management Act planning tribunals.
The event will also include a speech by retired Judge Shonagh Kenderdine and a tribute by Sir Edward Taihakurei Durie to the late historian Professor Alan Ward, who returned from Australia late in life to contribute to the Waitangi Tribunal’s historic claim research.
