Fleet rebuild brings job training

The Nelson company building Aotearoa Fisheries’ new fleet wants to give young Maori a start in marine engineering.
Aimex Service Group is building up to six 24 metre boats for the mostly family-owned firms fishing in to the Maori-owned company.
The first trawler for Tauranga-based fishing company RMD is due to be launched in mid-2016.
It’s the largest fleet renewal programme in the New Zealand fishing industry since the 1970s and is needed for fishers to make best use of new sustainable fishing technology.
Aimex chief executive Steve Sullivan says the company wants to become a leader in the marine engineering sector.
The Maori Youth Development Programme will give young Maori hands on boat-building experience and represents the alignment of Aimex’s vision and that of Aotearoa Fisheries.
