Kapa haka reaches global audience

Prominent kapa haka advocate Willie Te Aho says outgoing chief executive Darrin Apanui has left Te Matatini in a sound position.
He says as well as organising the biannual national Maori performing arts competitions, Mr Apanui helped establish Aotearoa Kapa Haka Ltd to manage broadcast rights and opportunities.
That has meant not just highlight shows on Maori Television but live streaming and on demand services on the Hakatv.com website, as well as packages being picked up by overseas broadcasters.
"We’ve seen some fantastic results with the secondary schools going to 47 different countries last year. This year over a million viewers throughout Te Matatini. The primary schools held last month and the wide coverage that it got not only nationally but internationally as well and Darrins fingerprints are clearly on that, that was instigated developed and lifted to this peak while he was there,"says Willie Te Aho.
