Royalty share boosts Maori writing
Maori writers have fared well out of Copyright Licensing New Zealand’s contestable fund
Kelly Ana Morey from Ngati Kuri, who held last year's Maori Writer’s Residency at the Michael King Writers’ Centre in Auckland, has $20,000 to support her mahi.
A smaller grant of $1250 went to novelist and whitebaiter Keri Hulme of Ngai Tahu.
Now in its second year and with funds available increased to $60,000, the fund has picked seven projects that demonstrate writing and publishing or education sector growth and development.
Huia Publishers has $4000 to develop resources that help teachers use te reo titles in the classroom.
The Publishers Association gets $15,000 to run a campaign in the education sector that New Zealand Content Counts, and Bridget Williams Books has $10,000 to invest in writer development for its successful BWB Texts series of essays.
