Kaimai kaitiaki on track to settle
Conservation land in the Kaimai Range and school sites in Matamata and Omokoroa could be on the table for a settlement with Ngati Hinerangi.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson on Saturday signed an agreement in principle with the iwi, which is part of the Tainui waka.
He says the settlement includes transfer of sites in the Kaimai Range, with continuity of public access guaranteed to all but one site of high cultural significance to the iwi.
All existing third party interests will be maintained by the settlement.
The commercial redress has been set at $8.1 million.
The Office of Treaty Settlements will now work through the implications for overlapping claims, with the aim of initialling the deed of settlement about this time next year.
