Miraka offers bonus for environment care

Maori-owned milk company Miraka is offering a 20 cents a kilogram premium to suppliers who meet the standards of its new excellence programme.
The company has about 100 farmer suppliers within 85 km of its whole milk powder factory and UHT plant at Mokai northwest of Taupo.
Miraka will cease its raw milk purchase price regime of Fonterra Milk Price+10c/kgms from 1st June 2015 and replace it with its own Miraka Milk Price.
Its general manager of milk supply, Grant Jackson, says Miraka wants to improve efficiency to achieve higher product quality with a lower environmental footprint.
The five pillars of the programme are environment, milk quality and food safety, people, animal welfare, and prosperity.
The company is talking with suppliers about best on-farm practices for maintaining water quality, effluent management, erosion control, recycling, and environmental risk awareness and mitigation.
