Joe Te Rito brings Ako Aotearoa north
Ako Aotearoa has brought on board academic Joe Te Rito as its deputy director Maori to replace Ngahiwi Apanui, who left to head up the Maori Language Commission Te Taura Whiri.
Ako is a professional development and support organisation for the tertiary sector.
Dr Te Rito, from Rongomaiwahine and Ngati Kahungunu, has an international reputation for his contribution to the revitalisation of the Maori language both through education and the media.
He is currently senior research fellow at Maori research centre Nga Pae o te Maramatanga.
He will be based at Ako’s northern hub at Auckland University of Technology.
