Kapa haka gaining wider clout

The outgoing Chief Executive of Te Matatini says kapa haka will become increasingly important to the way New Zealand sees itself.
Darrin Apanui says he’s impressed with the way Maori performing arts are becoming a part of public events and not just confined to the competition stage.
He says the reaction to haka in the recent public memorial service for rugby great Jonah Lomu shows the change happening.
"If we can get all New Zealanders to participate in some form of kapa haka or haka or a waiata or some kind, then we are all winning as building that whole nationhood, and when you start talking about that, that is when you start to click on all the tick boxes that government are looking for as well," Mr Apanui says.
