Hato Petera hostel bid unsanctioned
The Catholic Diocese of Auckland has squelched talk that the boarding facilities at Hato Petera College would reopen in 2016.
On Monday a group claiming to be board members of Te Whanau o Hato Petera Trust told students and their whanau that boarding would be available next year.
But church communications manager Lyndsay Freer says the group is not legally constituted, and the diocese is working with trustees appointed by the previous board.
Monday was the deadline for a group led by former principal Sir Toby Curtis to come up with a plan for a new entity to operate the boarding facilities in a way that would be safe for students and financially sustainable.
Ms Freer says instead of the expected plan, the diocese was told the task had been handed over to the new group, which wanted more time. This was refused.
She says the original trust is insolvent and being wound up, with the diocese covering the debt previous trustees are liable for.
It’s not prepared to cover future debts or continue to fund the hostels.
Hato Petera will open next year for day students.
