NZ Paris stance irks Greens
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says New Zealand won’t take the action needed to halt global warming until it gets a government that takes climate change seriously.
John Key’s call at this week’s climate summit in Paris for an end to fossil fuel subsidies had the New Zealand Prime Minister being accused of hypocrisy by climate groups who pointed to this country’s increased subsidies under his watch.
Ms Turei says the Greens have a plan for reducing New Zealand’s emissions to 30 percent below 1990 levels, far more credible than the official 11 percent target, but it was ignored because the National Government still doesn’t believe there is a problem.
"Let’s not spend $40m on subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. Let's spend that $40m on supporting solar and wind on government buildings for example, solar on government buildings would be great. Let's do it by investing in public transport so it's easier for kids and families to get to work, basic stuff that helps people out," she says.
