A collective of Maori and Pacific women artists will raise the West Papuan Morning Star flag in South Auckland today.

Te Rito Peyroux from Oceania Interrupted says today should have been West Papuan Independence day, but instead West Papuans who want to raise the flag in their turangawaewae would face arrest and imprisonment.

The country has been under the control of Indonesia for more than 50 years, and she says arbitrary arrest, brutality and killings are a daily fact for tangata whenua.

The flag will be raised at a ceremony at Otamariki Park in Otara at 5.30 this evening.
