Ocean scientist to helm Lincoln Maori team

A former ocean research chief scientist at the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere has been appointed deputy vice chancellor for Maori and communities at Lincoln University.
Dr Charlotte Severne is of Ngati Tuwharetoa and Ngai Tuhoe descent, and has extensive experience in the research sector.
She also chairs Lake Rotoaira Forest Trust and is deputy chair of Opepe Farm Trust.
She says Lincoln has a crucial role in meeting Maori development aspirations.
Maori farms and forestry companies want to hire capable Maori graduates, but too few are coming through the tertiary system.
Dr Severne says she will look for ways for Lincoln to partner with iwi and Maori on commercial and research opportunities, and to put the university’s whenua strategy for relationships with Maori communities into practical effect.
