The government is putting $6 million into the redevelopment of Te Wharekura o Maniapoto, near Te Kuiti.

Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye says the school, which has grown from a primary school into one going from new entrants to year 13, had challenges with restricted space and flood-prone fields.

The existing buildings will be replaced with a new two-storey building.

There will also be a new multipurpose space, containing specialist learning spaces and a covered, all-weather outdoor playing area, as well as improved drainage and playing fields.

The kura shares a site and resources with Te Kohanga Reo o Oparure.

Ms Kay says the new facilities will allow for future roll growth.

Construction is expected to start later in 2016, with the new facilities available for use in late 2017.
