No screen time for Maori musos
Ranea Aperahama won the Tui for his album Tihei Maori Ora, but the audience at home didn’t get to see either his haka of triumph or his poroporoaki for Jonah Lomu.
That’s because the broadcast of the Vodafone-sponsored New Zealand Music Awards switched away the cameras whenever there was Maori content on screen.
Renea Aperahama says that’s disappointing, and it’s the third year it has happened.
He says organisers have picked a fight Maori can’t afford to back down from.
Ranea Aperahama wants Maori broadcast funding agency Te Mangai Paho and the language commission Te Taura Whiri to talk to awards organisers about their attitude to Maori music.
