Lomu an icon for changing South Africa
Former All Black Frank Bunce says his friend Jonah Lomu made a major contribution to world rugby.
Lomu died yesterday at the age of 40, and tributes are flowing for the giant winger who became an international star by scoring four tries against England in the 1995 World Cup semi-final.
Bunce says it was in South Africa where he really made an impact, especially among that country’s Coloured and Black populations.
"Rugby was a white man’s game in the early days in South Africa. They see a big guy coming over like that and being able to do to all the white faces over there what he did, not that Jonah ever thought that way, I think it was something they looked on and took on and took him as one of their own because of his exploits on the field against the oppression," he says.
