Marathon from geyser to volcano
Tuhourangi descendants will be among the 1000 runners and walkers who will tomorrow retrace the iwi’s journey after the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera.
The Tarawera Trail Marathon starts beside the Pohutu Geyser in the Whakarewarewa Valley, where many surviving Tuhourangi made homes after the eruption.
It finishes at Hot Water Beach on Lake Tarawera.
Organiser Paul Charteris says starting the event within Te Puia adds a cultural richness to the event, showcasing geothermal wonders as well as Maori arts and crafts and culture.
Athletes will be seen off with kapa haka and possibly an eruption from the geyser.
He says that will make it one of the most amazing start lines on the planet and athletes from around the world are coming to experience it.
The winner will receive a trophy carved at the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute.
