Marae justice call for kukupa killer
A Ngapuhi elder says Ngapuhi leader Raniera Sonny Tau should come back to Waitangi to face tribal justice.
Mr Tau, who has stood down as chair of the Ngapuhi Runanga until the New Year, yesterday pleaded guilty in the Auckland District Court to possessing and hunting kukupa.
He previously denied hunting the protected native pigeons during a trip to Southland.
Kingi Taurua says the incident has reflected on the whole tribe and elders want to deal with it in their away.
"Sonny should not be appearing before the Pakeha court he should be on a marae here in Waitangi and that we will decide his fate because we believe that Ngapuhi did not cede their sovereignty. We want Sonny to come back to the marae and let the old people decide whether he's guilty or otherwise," he says.
Kingi Taurua says now Mr Tau has pleaded guilty the police should drop the additional charges laid against him of conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
