Marae waste targeted for sake of Papatuanuku
Recycling advocates want to get more marae to cut down on the amount of waste they send to landfills.
About 35 marae from Pukekohe to Piopio are now part of the Para Kore initiative which has kept at least 60 tonnes of waste out of the tip.
Coordinator Pine Campbell says it started in 2009 after organisers of the Tainui Games shocked at the amount of rubbish left behind approached his recycling company Extreme Waste.
He says while marae workers are usually keen on the idea, its sometime a struggle to get the whanau who come in from elsewhere to buy in to the zero waste kaupaoa.
It’s a battle that must be won, as he explains in his marae presentations.
"The main driver behind this kaupapa is trying to save our papatuanuku and also our waterways because leachate always works its way to the water and finds its way further down to Tangaroa and into our food baskets," Mr Cambell says.
A national Para Kore wananga starts at Umupuia Marae in Maraetai tomorrow.
