Sound off hits wrong note
Ngai Tahu musician Ariana Tikao is defending her latest composition from what she says is racist criticism.
Karaka mai, Otautahi!, was played from four of Christchurch City Council's new navigation towers as part of the recent Audacious Festival of Sonic Arts.
Tour operator Robin McCarthy laid a noise complaint, saying it conjured up images of being in North Korea or the Middle East where they blare out monotones in public spaces.
Tikao says Muslim calls to prayers were an influence, it was also a beautiful karanga to her home town.
"The insulting way he talked came across as pretty ill informed. I’m sure he has never been to those places, and I’m quite concerned what he tells people on his tours," she says.
